Fat Management! The Thermogenic Factor
Revolutionary Research Breakthrough That Restores Man's Natural Ability to Burn Unwanted Fat: Thermogenesis

by Daniel B. Mowrey, Ph.D. (copyright 1994)

[I highly recommend you get a copy of this book and read it for yourself to truly understand the conception and misconception of thermogenesis. It is well written in language both the layperson and medical professional can understand. The research is well documented with 1,441 references listed at the end of the book. - Ed.]

AUTHOR'S NOTE

BE WARNED: ...some people are using [my book] to support so-called "thermogenic" products that DO NOT COMPLY with the standards and specifications for safety on such products set forth herein. Specifically, products containing ma huang and kola nut (or other caffeine-containing plant) with or without willow bark, but NOT CONTAINING ASPIRIN, are not supported by this book. The thermogenically SAFE AND EFFECTIVE molecule is ECA (Ephedra, Cola nut and Aspirin). This book contains information about an amazing, yet scientifically sound, approach to eliminating obesity. It describes in detail the substances, both natural and synthetic, that stimulate thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (the organ of thermogenesis) in the human body. The manufacturing tolerances for these substances are small, and critical ratios and percentages, as established in the research, must be precisely followed in order to avoid health risks. To avoid abuse, personal experimentation with these substances is strongly discouraged.

THE APRL SEAL.

American Phytotherapy Research Laboratory (APRL) was formed to carry out basic, archival and clinical research on medicinal plants. APRL has been involved in thermogenic research for over 3 years... and during that time has established a set of criteria regarding natural, phytopharmaceutical, thermogenic products. These criteria, derived mostly from published literature on thermogenesis, partly on existing patents, and partly on APRL's own research, are used to develop SAFE and EFFECTIVE products. Not just safe, and not just effective, but both safe and effective. Sadly, there are already a host of ineffective and/or unsafe so-called thermogenic products in the marketplace. The presence of the APRL Seal on the label or bottle of thermogenic product is a sign that the product adheres to the standards established through our research at APRL. (p. 7-8)

EXCERPTS

"Thermogenesis"... Its meaning is transparent: "thermo-" means heat, as in thermometer or thermostat; "genesis" means create, as in the first book of the Bible. It is a process that takes place in the bodies of many species of animals, including man. Thermo + genesis means the creation of heat, something the human body must do to maintain body temperature at 98.6 degrees F. (p. 11)

Thermogenesis also separates the thin from the fat! If you burn fat through thermogenesis, you are probably thin, or lean. If you don't burn fat, you probably store it, and if you store it, you and everybody else knows it, because it is fairly obvious. Wouldn't it be nice if we could reverse the tendency to store fat? What if you knew that beginning today you could reeducate your body to burn fat in stead of store it? Reigniting thermogenesis may be the key for you. At least it is worth a try. (p. 11)

Controlling body fat by manipulating thermogenesis may be the first physiologically sound, gimmick-free, approach to the subject in the history of medicine. It does not rely in fad diets or flimsy physiology, but instead addresses repair of a real metabolic process known to be deficient in many obese people. (p. 2)

Thermogenesis refers to the body's ability to produce heat from consumed and stored calories. More specifically, it refers to thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT), an organ specialized in turning calories into heat energy. Although thermogenesis occurs in all cells of the body, scientists are increasingly beginning to believe that a great many obesity problems are caused by improper thermogenic metabolism in BAT. BAT thermogenesis is meant to take up the slack in energy metabolism, to get rid of calories not used by the body in its daily struggle to keep us alive and healthy. (p. 2)

Diet is supposed to be a major stimulant of thermogenesis. Diet induced thermogenesis takes place in BAT; when BAT does not function properly, this form of thermogenesis fails to occur, and the calories are then stored as fat. (p. 3)

Thermogenic capacity can be restored and enlarged through the consumption of certain substances. The safest of these substances are ma huang and its major active constituent ephedrine. Ephedrine can be used very effectively to stimulate activity in BAT, yet, for decades scientists have been reluctant to recommend it because in order to activate thermogenesis to the extent necessary to make a dent in fat stores, it must be consumed in amounts exceeding safe levels. (p. 35)

There are at least 2 substances that combine with ephedrine or ma huang to both lower the quantity of ephedrine required for thermogenesis, and to render it safe for human consumption in the amounts necessary for thermogenesis. These substances are aspirin and caffeine. Additionally, these substances remove some of the unwanted actions of ephedrine, such as the tendency to accelerate the heart beat, thus making it much safer for human consumption. To be effective, the other substances must be combined with ephedrine in just the right proportions. Correctly combined, the result is an outstanding synergistic relationship that enhances the thermogenic action of small, non-toxic quantities of ephedrine. Unquestionably, there is a legitimate, beneficial and health-promoting use for aspirin and caffeine. (p. 37)

The synergy between ephedrine, xanthine [caffeine] and aspirin forms the logical basis for the thermogenic concept. Without all three, combined in precise ratios, true thermogenesis will not take place safely and effectively. Large amounts of ma huang or ephedrine will create thermogenesis, true enough, but not without unhealthy, unsafe, side effects. Large amounts of caffeine produce almost no thermogenesis in BAT, and can be detrimental to health. Aspirin also has no direct effect on thermogenesis, but in large amounts can damage the gastric mucosa and affect blood viscosity. However, when the right ratios of the active constituents are combined, a marvelous natural event occurs. The long dormant, genetically wasted, thermogenic process turns back on. The amount of BAT in the body begins to increase, its thermogenic capacity is expanded, and it goes to work burning up excess ingested calories and calories that have already been stored away as WAT (White Adipose Tissue). (p. 40)

Dieting, or caloric restriction, is absolutely unnecessary for effective thermogenesis. In fact, dieting actually reduces thermogenesis. On the other hand, this statement should not be construed as an endorsement of bingeing. It has been shown that stimulation of thermogenesis through the consumption of thermogenic agents will increase the effectiveness of a diet characterized by mild caloric restriction. The diet, however, does not increase thermogenesis. Dieting, in fact, lowers basal metabolic rate (BMR), and overfeeding tends to raise BMR in normal people. Therefore, if you must reduce your caloric intake, consume thermogenic to offset adverse effects on BMR. (p. 46)

Some of the more important side benefits of thermogenic substances: (1) anti-asthma effects, (2) energy production, (3) appetite suppression, and (4) steadily increasing BAT capacity. (p. 47-48)

A final point: In some people, the consumption of thermogenic instigates an immediate thermogenic reaction; in others, the effect may take a period of several weeks before it begins to work. How long it takes may depend on just how seriously deficient in brown adipose tissue a person is to begin with. If you initiate a thermogenics program and it doesn't start to work right away, give it time, and the BAT will eventually expand its capacity to the point where it can begin operating effectively. At that point, the fat will begin to be burned off. Do not approach this problem by consuming ever increasing amounts of thermogenic. (p. 40)
